🚀 Celebrating 10th anniversary of the European Union Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST)!
The EU SST is part of the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) component of the EU Space Programme, adopted by the European Union in 2021. What began with just 5 participating nations has grown into a network of 19 countries, demonstrating the power of European cooperation in protecting our space assets and strengthening our strategic autonomy.
🛰️ Recent events remind us why this mission is more critical than ever.
Ten days ago, a Russian satellite, identified as Kosmos 2612, reportedly made a rapid approach towards the Finnish ICEYE-X36 satellite, reducing the distance between them from approximately 350 km to 1.02km.
Such close approaches highlight the growing risks in an increasingly congested and contested space environment — and the urgent need for Europe to better protect its own space infrastructure.
🤝 Defense representatives from the France, German, Italy, Spain and UK shared a common understanding of the dual-use nature of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and the critical importance of data sharing and operational cooperation.
Europe needs to strengthen its ability to detect, understand and respond to threats in orbit. This requires advanced technologies, operational capabilities and greater coordination across the European SSA ecosystem.
🌍 Space-based SSA will be a key part of the solution.
At Simera Sense, we are developing our dedicated Space-based SSA camera 📸 , designed for hosted payloads and constellation deployment. By enabling space-based observation of objects in orbit, Non-Earth Imaging (NEI), our technology aims to complement ground-based surveillance and contribute to a more responsive, resilient and sovereign European space surveillance capability. As space becomes increasingly strategic for both defence and civilian services, protecting our space assets is no longer optional — it is a matter of European resilience and sovereignty.
Congratulations to the entire EU SST community on this important milestone, and to everyone working towards a safer and more sustainable space environment! 🚀
P:S: 🖼️ what's a love group photo. If you know the game book 'où est Charlie', where is Kammy or where you are in this photo? 😄
