🚀 The megaconstellation boom is reshaping the space industry and raising critical national security issues. According to Novaspace, more than 70,000 satellites are planned by major players like SpaceX, Amazon, and Blue Origin, intensifying demand for key materials such as gallium nitride and germanium. These materials are used in around 70% of sensitive high-performance components, with production highly concentrated—about 98% of gallium nitride and 85% of germanium manufacturing occurs in China, exposing Europe and the US to supply chain bottlenecks.
Beyond raw materials, the surge in space assets escalates the importance of 🎯Space Situational Awareness (SSA). SSA is both a technical challenge—tracking thousands of objects in crowded orbits—and a strategic imperative to prevent collisions and protect critical infrastructure in space. It combines sensor networks, data analysis, and decision-making tools that are essential for operational safety and national security.
The real dual challenge today is securing supply chains while advancing SSA capabilities to strengthen sovereignty and resilience. How can Europe accelerate innovation in SSA while reducing dependence on fragile supply chains? The stakes are high for the future of space security. 🚀🛰️💡
